Venting about new BS arrangement
by Nosferatu inwhen i was a teenager (especially when i wanted out of the org) i made up excuses to miss the meetings.
i always made sure i brought home lots of notebooks, textbooks, etc so it looked like i had a load of homework to do on meeting nights.
i sat on my bed doing my homework (or writing in my journal) just to get out of another night at the meeting (this didn't work on sunday).

Trimming the new 1.45 hr weeknite meeting down to about 1.5 hours (dump the no.2 talk, etc)
And less emphasis on driving around the neighbourhood wasting your gas in FS knocking on empty doors, with more emphasis on street preaching, mall preaching, commuter preaching (display stands, etc) and general informal preaching.

If The Society REALLY Cared About Gas Prices They'd Implement Program Now!
by minimus inthey are full of sh*t!
if i were a practicing jehovah's witness, i'd seriously take the governing body's words to heart immediately.
since they don't want to add any further burdens on us, i would not "wait on jehovah (them)" but instead i'd follow the spirit of their timely words and cut out one more meeting night and save gas money!

Absolutely. That's why they will have to change something to do with field service to make it less burdensome expenses wise. Perhaps by ending the requirement to record 'not at homes', reducing pioneer hours yet again, shifting away from driving around in cars and instead setting doing more preaching on busy streets, malls, business districts, setting up street 'stands' like they do in Norway for example.

Reporting preaching time is another obvious 'burden' that could be removed
by yadda yadda 2 inthe basic scriptural argument by the wts is that since the apostles 'reported' their experiences, it is correct to expect jw's to 'report' their preaching activity on a monthly form.
(there are other reasons given for reporting time ,eg, the claim that reporting time helps the elders gauge someones spiritual 'strength', etc.
since the scriptural record is that only experiences were reported back by the early christians, the society therefore only has justification for jw's to report their 'experiences' to each other, not to formerly report their actual time preaching.

The basic scriptural argument by the WTS is that since the apostles 'reported' their experiences, it is correct to expect JW's to 'report' their preaching activity on a monthly form. (There are other reasons given for reporting time ,eg, the claim that reporting time helps the elders gauge someones spiritual 'strength', etc. There is not the slightest scriptural precedent for this).
There is a glaring flaw with the Society's line of reasoning.
Since the scriptural record is that only experiences were reported back by the early Christians, the Society therefore only has justification for JW's to report their 'experiences' to each other, not to formerly report their actual time preaching. The apostles and early disciples simply did not report their time, at least we have no scriptural record of them doing that. They only reported the encounters and experiences (the actual scriptures eludes me at present). Since the argument is that Jehovah has had everything written in the bible for a reason, isn't the converse true? If it's not in the Bible as a pattern for Christians, JW's should not have to do it.
The Society has quite clearly gone 'beyond what is written' by having a policy that JW's report their time. There is not the slightest scriptural justification for expecting Christians to have to do, and report on a form, about 10 hours a month preaching. Not only that, if one does not adhere to the policy or only reports 1 or 2 hours a month regularly, they are made to feel guilty and inferior, denied privileges, and often marginalised by the congregation.
This is just another 'burden' and 'heavy load' that has been heaped onto the backs of JW's by the WTS. The GB say they don't wish to 'burden' JW's with anything that is not necessary, just as the first-century 'GB' didn't. Since soaring gas prices has been used a reason to dump the home book study arrangement, isn't the same reason there to remove the unnecessary burden of being expected to go out and do about 10 hours a month? JW's would no doubt be delighted to be relieved of this 'burden'.
What the Society needs to do is this: completely dump reporting of time and instead, have a regular 10 minute session at the end of each service meeting, or even Sunday meeting also, where the congregation are invited to report their 'experiences', following the same simple pattern found in scripture. Although some would obviously desist from going out in FS if time reporting was stopped, having a regular time allotted to bringing one's 'good report' to the congregation in terms of experiences only would still act as as a great motivater and encouraging influence for the congregation to continue preaching. This would also shift the focus away from sheer quantity to quality - only those with interesting experiences will relate them, putting the onus everyone to try harder to start bible studies, have good discussions, etc.
After all, JW's have been brainwashed into thinking that they are 'bloodguilty' if they don't preach and their salvation depends on it (some scripture about saving themselves and those that listen to them), so most I think would remain inclined to at least put in a few hours a month.
Hopefully, monthly reporting of FS/preaching time will be another 'burden' the GB may soon remove (but don't hold your breath on that one folks!)

Dispelling Myths: 1914 Expectations
by AuldSoul injehovah's witnesses currently teach that prior to 1914 no one could have predicted what happened in europe in 1914. they teach that the world was heading toward such idyllic stability that the events of 1914 caught everyone off-guard.
so surprised were the people of the time that they looked back with fondness at the calm preceding 1914 as a time that could never be gone back to.. what were the bible students teaching about 1914 prior to that year?
in what capacity did they claim to be teaching?.

Yes, yes, old news, but in reality most JW's just don't care whether it was predicted that the end would come in 1914 or the beginning of the end would start in 1914. All that matters to them is that the Watchtower said something about 1914 and something significant did happen - WW1. If it weren't for the strange coincidence that WW1 started in 1914 then the entire chronology and teaching would have been dumped by nowo, or at least relegated to a meaningless, hardly mentioned creed like 1843 is with 7th Day Adventists.

What happens to the numbered 'talks' then?
by carla ini'm always confused about the 'talks' you guys are always talking about.
will there still be #4's and so on after the new arrangement?
just shorter?

They will definitely shorten or dump some of the meeting parts because 1.45 hrs is just way too long on weeknite, especially for young families. It's ridiculous. They will cut it down to 1.5 hours in due course. I think they will dump the silly no.2 'talk' (reading) on the Theocraptic Misery Stool and shorten one or two of the Serve Us Meeting parts.

I would have gone to University a lot earlier and been more ahead in my career than I am now. Or I would have been a complete bogan.
And I would have lost my virginity a lot sooner.

Prediction: the new looong weeknite meeting will be trimmed
by yadda yadda 2 inthe new version weeknite meeting combining the cbs, the tms and sm will be 1.45 hours long!.
that's just wayyy too long.
with the tendency for many talks to creep over time, it will be more like 2 hours of boring, prosaic, dry, dull, drivel on your bums on those cold, winter nights.

The new version weeknite meeting combining the CBS, the TMS and SM will be 1.45 hours long!
That's just wayyy too long. With the tendency for many talks to creep over time, it will be more like 2 hours of boring, prosaic, dry, dull, drivel on your bums on those cold, winter nights.
Those who used to slack off on attending the home book study will now slack off on attending the weeknite meeting.
So expect over the next year or two for this to be trimmed. They will start by dumping the No.2 talk on the TMS. There is simply nothing gained from listening to some snotty kid or reluctant teenager doing nothing more than reading the bible for 5 minutes. This talk is now an embarrassment and I predict will be canned before too long.
The new version weeknite meeting will also be shifted to a Wednesday nite in most cases.
